Boatyard History:

The 17.44 South Boatyard was established in 1995 by two brothers, Laurent & Christoph Champroux. In 2005 the facility was sold and renamed, The Port Vila Boatyard. In 2012 the boatyard was sold to the current owners. The Port Vila Boatyard has been providing top quality marine services to Vanuatu’s local and foreign yachting community for the past 20 years. This has played an instrumental role in the growth and development of Vanuatu’s yachting industry and continues to do so today.

Our mission:

  • Continue providing top quality marine repairs and services.
  • Continue providing support and leadership to Vanuatu’s growing yachting tourism industry.
  • We aim to improve economic, social and education opportunities for Ni-Vanuatu.
  • To create and maintain sustained local employment through labour-friendly business operations.
  • To provide learning opportunities on site and elsewhere to increase skills and employ-ability.

What we do:

We are Vanuatu’s most comprehensive and most experienced marine service providers to the local and foreign yachting community. Port Vila Boatyard is Vanuatu’s best full service marine repair, haul out & vessel storage facility. We also provide Comprehensive Vessel Management services for a growing fleet of locally based charter vessels.

Our repair & maintenance services are offered to vessels big and small both in and out of the water. Look for the Boatyard longboat around Port Vila bay we are always around between our yard and Yachting World. If you need anything simply call us over.

As a Full Service Facility – We are able to cater for all your vessel maintenance needs including total or partial refit projects and specialist boat modifications & customizing.

Boatyard Equipment:

We have a purpose built (in NZ) hydraulic trailer capable of handling monohull’s up to 25 metric tons and 16 meters in length and multihulls up to 25 metric tons and 20 meters in length and 9 meter beam.

We can accommodate both sail and power boats. Each yacht is hauled out on a steel cradle and remains on that cradle whilst in the yard. We secure every monohull vessel on their cradle with 4 steel arm uprights on the vessel sides and 4 “Acro Props” with pads located under the hull.

Multihull’s sit on steel beams either directly on their keels with additional support fore and aft of the keel or are supported and suspended from the vessels bridge deck, depending on the type of vessel.

During cyclone season all vessels are propped with additional supports and are then strapped to their cradles and to strong points located in the ground around the vessel. This method of securing vessels out of the water is accepted by the majority of marine insurers.

Other Equipment:

We have several cyclone rated moorings right in front of our beach in one of the most protected parts of Port Vila Bay. We have a 6 meter longboat and a 8 meter center consol for call outs, towing, diving support etc.

Port Vila Boatyard – perfectly situated – perfect all year round:

Port Vila Botyard is located on the island of Efate, in Port Vila’s, Pontoon Bay. This is by far is the best choice for visiting yachts that are planing on spending the cyclone season in Vanuatu. Port Vila is easy to get to from NZ and Australia. There is an abundance of activities in close proximity to our yard. We also have a beautiful white sand beach where you can have a cool swim after a hard days work on your boat (yes we do allow visiting yacht owners who spend cyclone season with us to work on their own boats) and then top that off with a refreshing sun-downer at our very own Boatyard Bar located at the front of the facility leading onto the beach.

Cruising Notes: Yachts considering Vanuatu as a cyclone season layover should bear in mind that Port Vila is really the best place for this. Vanuatu’s northern islands (including Santo) are much hotter, more humid and the rainfall is considerably higher than what we have in Port Vila. The heat and moisture can cause all sorts of damage to a yacht. Additionally that hot and wet environment further north is not conducive to getting much maintenance work done. In or out of the water, Port Vila Boatyard is the perfect place to locate yourself for the cyclone season. The prudent mariner does not rely on scanty information from unreliable sources so come over to meet us and see for yourself.
